Mad Lab is a public art making project at You Are Here. Periodically we clear out the gallery and transform the space into a community workshop. We invite artists and community members to make art in a social setting: art that enhances and animates the the City of Jeannette and enriches the makers as well those who encounter the works. Past Mad Labs have produced artist designed benches for publicly accessible places, and mosaic planters to adorn business entrances. Every Mad Lab is new and different.

Summer 2024 Houses for City Birds

Create an art house for the birds in your neighborhood and learn about local species and bird conservation.

Here are the ways you can participate in Mad Lab: You can design and finish a bird house either solo or collaboratively that will be installed by You Are Here in a local park. OR, you may take your creation home with you, but we kindly ask that you make a donation in an amount of your choosing to help us cover materials.

Mad Lab work sessions begin on Friday, April 26 and will be open every Friday and Saturday from 10 am until 4 pm until June 8. If you would like to design and complete a birdhouse in one session, we strongly suggest you arrive before 2:00 to begin your project.

Besides the houses themselves, paint and mosaic supplies will be available and ready for you.

Register to participate by emailing us at yah406clay@gmail.com or 724-578-3332. Family groups are considered as one participant.

Each participant will receive a thornless blackberry bush to take home and plant to help sustain native bird population, courtesy of Sacred Gate Farm.

There is no fee to participate but donations are appreciated.

During Mad Lab, the YAH gallery will be presenting a special exhibit of bird and nature focused art work by Eileen Stoner, Alexis Rodefer and Candace Kubinec.

Eileen Stoner is a self-taught graphite artist known for her detailed, naturalistic renderings of wildlife and pets. Her drawings take up to 20 hours to complete, and to bring her subject to life.

Alexis Rodefer uses watercolor to capture the bounty of North America’s eastern ecosystems. “I am especially fascinated with birds and their complex relationships and roles in local ecosystems.”

Candace Kubinec is a photographer and poet whose haunting images bring the natural world close up revealing detail and nuance that we miss in daily life and casual glance.

Opening Reception 6 until 8 pm, April 27
