In Memoriam: Tribute to Tony Naponic

  • Google Calendar ICS

Tony Naponic, born in Adamsburg, PA, in 1954, gained renown as a painter in the 1980s. Three of his works hang at the Art Institute of Chicago and he exhibited throughout the Midwest, in New York City and the Pittsburgh area, and in Kansas City (where he was educated) during his lifetime. He left us too soon, in 2003, at the age of 49.

Mr. Naponic's beloved niece has become the guardian of much of his work and will allow us to host some of it in a memorial exhibit on view December 6 and continuing over the holidays and the month of January.  Plan to stop in and see his exuberant abstract and figurative paintings while they are at YAH! A closing reception is planned for February 14 when you can learn more about Mr. Naponic’s life and legacy.

Keep an eye out for more details about this show in our December newsletter.

Annual "Oh, Scrap!" Drop Off

  • Google Calendar ICS

Ah, February! This year two traditional dates of infamy are consecutive: Friday the 13th followed by Valentines’ Day on Saturday the 14th! Wow! No matter what kind of outcome you may be courting with regard to those dates, a good way to either deflect or direct the winds of fate is to purge your home of unused, unwanted art and craft supplies! Yep—a proven tactic. Unburden yourself of guilt and unfulfilled dreams by donating your excess supplies to the Oh, Scrap! artist re-use center. You Are Here will resell items for a fraction of their original price and use the funds to support our programs and keep the lights on! You, friend, will end up with a more spacious home, and lots of good karma (handy on both of the aforementioned days!)

Please click on our “Oh, Scrap” link at the top of the screen for guidelines regarding what we can and cannot accept. And thanks in advance!

Intro to Gelli Printing

Intro to Gelli Printing

Join artist Mary Raneri on Saturday, November 1 at 11 am and learn all about gelli printimaking! THIS IS A CLASS FOR ADULT BEGINNERS.  It is a very basic, simple compilation of introductory steps.

Printing with a gel plate is a fascinating process that results in one-of-a-kind, hand-printed pieces with great textures, colors, and layers. You can use this process to make cards, design your own wrapping paper, embellish fabric, art journals, mixed media pieces or works of art that can be framed. It is a fun, productive process.  Don’t worry!  You can not mess up.  LOL!

We will supply the gelli pads, paper, brayers (rollers), and paint.  If you have never experienced printmaking, this is a wonderful place to start your journey.  Believe me – it’s addicting! Once you get going and you process the information – the ideas flow and it’s difficult to stop printing.

In this class you will walk out with a card you have designed and multiple pieces you have tried in class.  Moreover, you might use your work as background, layer, border, or, perhaps, in a mixed media project you have been pondering.  With our guidance, stencils, texture tools, stamps and found objects – it’s just going to be too hard not to show off your great ideas!

$35 fee includes supplies

Prop Making for the Stage

Nicholas F. Doyle is the co-owner of a Creative Fabrication shop, Vast Made Studios in
Pittsburgh, PA.  With a Fine Art degree from Ohio University, Nicholas found work immediately
as a scenic and props artist for off-broadway productions and multiple theaters and companies
including notable places, Pittsburgh CLO, Carnegie Mellon University, Fulton Theatre, and The

visual and physical scenic and prop elements commonly seen in a performance space within
the theater productions, movies/films, and television shows.

Puppets and Performance
Oct
5
to Nov 16

Puppets and Performance

You Are Here announces a new exhibition, Puppets and Performance: a festival of puppetry, that  explores the magic of puppets---their creation, personality and performance. A puppet is a figure – most often a human or animal form—that is brought to life and made to perform by a human puppeteer, not by any machine. But besides being a performer, separate from the movement they are given, a puppet is also an artistic object created by the puppeteer.  Puppeteers are artists that bring together the visual, kinetic and dramatic potential of their creations.

Puppets and Performance, curated by Natalie Condrac, invites visitors to come behind the scenes where the magic begins with puppets, their personality, and their performance space.   Featured artists include D.T. Burns, Tom Sarver, Sasha Schwartz, Sherri Roberts, Joann Kielar, Maddie Macek, Ayne Terceira and Lindsay Goranson.

The opening reception for Puppets and Performance takes place on Saturday, October 5 at 6:00 pm. the reception is free and open to the public.
