On A Limb: Exhibition and MadLab Workshop Dedicated to Native Birds

Mad Lab is back after a break with exciting new projects to build houses and feeders for the birds of the City of Jeannette. Come and join us on Fridays, and Saturdays between April 26 and June 8. Pick a birdhouse and make it a work of art; then either donate it to be installed at a local park, or, for a small donation of your choosing, take it home and invite local birds to build a nest.

You will work on your bird house while surrounded by the inspiring art work of Eileen Stoner, Alexis Rodefer, and Candace Kubinec focusing on birds and the natural world.

Eileen Stoner is a self-taught graphite artist known for her detailed, naturalistic renderings of wildlife and pets. Her drawings take up to 20 hours to complete, and to bring her subject to life.

Alexis Rodefer uses watercolor to capture the bounty of North America’s eastern ecosystems. “I am especially fascinated with birds and their complex relationships and roles in local ecosystems.”

Candace Kubinec is a photographer and poet whose haunting images bring the natural world close up revealing detail and nuance that we miss in daily life and casual glance.

Complete details can be found on the Mad Lab page. Just hit the tab on the navigation bar above.

Opening reception, April 27: 6 to 8 pm

“The rapid declines in bird (population) signal the intensifying stresses that wildlife and people alike are experiencing around the world because of habitat loss, environmental degradation, and  extreme climate events,” said Amanda Rodewald, director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Center for Avian Population Studies and a co-chair of the State of the Birds science committee. “Taking action to bring birds back delivers a cascade of benefits that improve climate resilience and quality of life for people.”

We will also be announcing other related events and activities. Watch for details.

MAD LAB Details Are posted on the Mad Lab page!

Poet Kaitlyn Gidick Book Release

Kaitlyn Gidick’s latest poetry release, When the Earth Turned Slowly, is a culmination of the whirlwind of the last five years-from the pandemic to politics, love found and lost friendships, and the crushing weight of existentialism.

It is, as well, a love letter to the music scene of her teenage years, to childhood memories and middle school drama, all looked back on with a fondness for simpler times.

In addition to When the Earth Turned Slowly, Kaitlyn released her first poetry chapbook, Also, in 2018.

Join us at You Are Here from 7 until 9 pm for the introduction of When the Earth Turned Slowly and a reading by the author.

Chasing the Sun

This juried exhibition honors the vernal equinox.

The vernal equinox is the moment in the year when the Sun is exactly above the Equator and day and night are of equal length. It is that brief time of equity and balance on the cusp of seasonal change. The vernal equinox is also known as the spring equinox because, in Earth’s Northern Hemisphere, it marks the first day of a season of growth and renewal. It is a physical phenomenon but looms large in spiritual lore and the way humans mark time.
